المحاضرة السادسة

Today we will study how to read long poem؟
So we will study two long poems in each poem there is a number of images which communicate us with the massage of the poet in the poem .
سوف ندرس اليوم كيفية قراءة القصائد الطويلة واليوم سوف ندرس قصيدتين طويلتين لنعرف الرسالة التي يريد الشاعر أن يوصلها لنا نحن القراء .

The first poem (meeting at night )page 59

First , we should examine the title ,meeting at night ,a meeting that takes place at night ,the poet is going to meet the woman he loves at night ,so the poem is about love , although the word love didn't mentioned in the poem .
He is making journey at the sea ,so he is sailing on a boat in river to meet the woman he loves .
The poet presents his experience in a manner which allow not only to see and hear what he saw and heard but also share his expectations and excitement .

What about the images in this poem؟

We have different images in this poem

1-in the first line there are two images(grey sea –black land)the two of them are visual images of color

2-in the second line there is one image (yellow half moon)it is a visual image of color

3-in the third line the word (waves)image of color combined by movement and sound

4- in the line number five (pushing brow )_is image of sound

5-in the line six (slushy sand )is an image of sound –(slush) is the sound of

6-in line7 the image (warm sea –scented beach )is image of smell and sound

7-in line9(a tap at the pane )_is an image of sound. and (sharp scratch ) is an image of sound combined color

8-in line10 (lighted match) is an image of sound combined color

9-in line 12(two hearts beating each to each )is an image of sound

The second poem(night journey ) page 60

This poem also about a journey but this time its on train, the poet say once the train moves all the passengers fall asleep ,and he is the only person who is awake ,he look out side window ,he see some objects ,these objects were two kinds of objects :

A)natural objects like trees

B)man made objects like bridges

Then, he gives images of those objects ,the train is moving from the east to some where in the west ,to the land which the poet like

What about the images in this poem ؟

1-the first image (rhythm rocks the earth ) it’s a sound image ,and the rhythm is the regular sound of the train, and it is like the sound of the rocks when it hits the earth
ومعني هذه الصورة الصوت الذي يصدره القطار بينما هو يمشي (الريتم )ولذلك الصورة هنا صورة( صوت ) حيث يشبه الشاعر صوت القطار وهو يمشي بصوت الصخور وهي تصطدم بالأرض

2-the second image (bridges of iron lace )it's a visual image of a man made object.
الصور الثانية (هي صورة الكباري المصنوعة من المعدن ) – وهي صورة مرئية وبما أن الكباري من صنع الإنسان إذا الصورة تسمي (صورة مرئية لشئ من صنع الإنسان )

3-the third image is in the word (trees )and it's a visual image of natural objects.

4- the word( lake ) it's a visual image of natural objects.

5-(straining at a curve ) the meaning of this sentence is: when the train is moving the steel of the wheels of train and the steel of the lines are making straining sound so the image here is a (sound image ).

6-(I watch the beacon swing ) it's a visual image of a man made object.
(the beacon) يعني عمود الإنارة في المحطة

7-(we thunder throw ravines ) the meaning of this sentence is: when the train pass throw valleys it make sound like the sound of thunder so the image is (sound image ).

8-(rush into a rain )image of sound of the rain so it's sound image of natural objects.

9-(the pistons jerk and shove) the meaning of this sentence is: when the train moves throw the valleys the wheels shake and the brakes shake also so the image here is (sound image ).
معني هذه الصورة انه عندما يمر القطار في الوديان تهتز العجلات وأيضا الفرامل ومكابس القطار وتصدر صوتا لذلك الصورة هنا (صورة صوت )

وبعدين الشاعر فضل مستيقظ طوال الليل لأنه كان منتظر الوصول إلي بلده التي يحبها
وانتهت القصيدة .
